We live in a world that puts a lot of significance on our outward appearance. If you’re feeling insecure about yourself, you’re not alone. In fact, 30% of Americans feel negatively about their body image overall. You’re probably thinking, “That’s not a shocking statistic.” Sadly, there is a lot of pressure to obtain the ideal body for a multitude of reasons like social media, diet culture, and even interactions with others. In that case, why not shower your loved ones with non-physical compliments?
There isn’t anything inherently wrong with complimenting someone’s appearance. Comments like “I love your style!” or “You look lovely today!” can be greatly appreciated! However, we need to be careful not to make someone feel like their self-worth is based on how they look. Besides, there are so many interesting things about us that go beyond physical appearance.
I’m writing this post during the holiday season. It’s a time when we see a lot of our family and friends. Let’s all be mindful about how we speak to others…particularly kids and teens who are at a sensitive period in their lives. Make your loved ones smile and show them your appreciation with sincere non-physical compliments that have nothing to do with looks! ✨
Importance of Non-Physical Compliments:
They help with body acceptance.
Body acceptance is exactly what it sounds like: accepting your body at its current state. As my therapist always tells me, you don’t have to love how you look right now, but you should make an effort to be kind to yourself. Part of that is through acceptance. You’d be helping promote body acceptance with meaningful compliments that aren’t appearance based!
It’s good to switch things up!
We are more than our appearance. While complimenting someone’s eyes or outfit is a nice gesture, why not look past just the surface? It’s truly a paradigm shift given how body image plays such an intense role in our society. Looks aside, complimenting someone about their great sense of humor or taste in books is just as awesome!
Non-physical compliments are meaningful.
Non-physical compliments show you appreciate someone on a deeper level. Everyone needs people in their lives that truly celebrate them for who they are. So why not be your people’s biggest cheerleader? 💕
Don’t be shy about giving them!
I know sometimes giving compliments can make us feel cheesy or awkward. But really think about the last time someone said something kind and genuine about you as a person. I bet it made you feel happy and likely stuck with you. That memory is what you would be giving someone else in your life! The truth is everyone wants to feel appreciated by the people around them.
And there are also plenty of non-physical compliments you can give someone that you don’t know very well. Just like with physical compliments, make sure they are respectful and you’re all good!
