A little gesture can make someone’s entire day. It may be as simple as giving a sweet compliment, writing a thank you card, or holding the door open for someone. Sometimes we don’t even realize the positive impact we make on other people just by smiling or saying hello in the morning. Here are 40 random acts of kindness ideas you can do today! 💗
40 Random Acts of Kindness Ideas
1. Buy someone else’s coffee in line.
On your morning run to Starbucks, buy a coffee for someone else. You can give the barista a few extra dollars for the person behind you. It’s a nice little way to treat a stranger, especially if they’re not having a good day. Who doesn’t love a free cup of coffee? 💓☕
2. Give a customer service agent a compliment.
Coming from a call center representative, it makes my day when customers compliment me. I always try to give the best service possible and it feels great to receive positive feedback. Next time you’re speaking to a customer service rep, let them know they’re doing a fantastic job. They’ll appreciate the compliment and you’ll definitely make them smile! 😊
3. Leave a five star review online.
Do you have a go-to dinner spot? What about a local boutique, salon, or fun event in town? Write up a positive review online as a way to say thanks! 💛
4. Donate blood.
You’ll help someone in need and potentially even save a life. Do a quick google search and find blood donation centers near you! The process only takes 10 minutes and you get snacks afterwards!
5. Call up a family member.
Say hello to a loved one just because! Take time out of your day to let them know you care. Texting is super convenient, but sometimes it’s nice to just hear someone’s voice. 📱
6. Volunteer at a nursing home.
Unfortunately, nursing homes are often times understaffed despite having a lot of residents. If an elderly resident isn’t getting frequent visitors, they may feel lonely or sad. As a volunteer, you’ll keep residents company, play games, and receive other duties from the staff. The experience is rewarding in many ways — you’ll learn from people who are older than you and also make their day better! ☀️
7. Search your pantry for nonperishable items.
Check your kitchen for nonperishable items. A lot of times, we buy extra items that we don’t even really use. I’m thinking of canned veggies, tuna, or beans. Rather than keeping these items in your pantry, donate them to a local food bank.
If you’re not sure what classifies as a nonperishable item, here is a helpful list for reference!
8. Hold the door for someone else.
When you’re out and about, make it a habit to hold the door for others. You’d be surprised to find that even a little gesture like this one can instantly lift someone’s mood!
9. Share a positive Facebook post.
While scrolling through your timeline, you may notice a lot of negative posts and reports. This gets pretty taxing, so share something positive instead! It can be a quick note telling your friends to have a wonderful day! Other good options are silly memes, adorable puppy videos, or a cute quiz you found online!
10. Cook dinner for your partner.
If your partner is having a stressful day, cook a special dinner for them! It’s such a simple but sweet way to say “I love you.” 💞Other random acts of kindness ideas can include doing a household task when it’s not your turn and packing their lunch for work.
Some of my favorite recipes:
11. Buy your pet a surprise from the store.
It’s important to always show respect and acts of kindness to your animal friends. Stop by the store and pick up a treat for your pet! Maybe it’s a biscuit, frozen treat, ball of yarn or chew toy! They’ll be excited when you get home with awesome gifts in your hands! 🎾
12. Shovel snow for your neighbor.
No one ever looks forward to shoveling snow in the winter. Pay it forward by taking that load off of your neighbor’s back. If you live in a warmer climate, cut their grass or offer to house sit for them while they’re away instead! 🏠
13. Send a letter to your best friend.
Buy some cute stationary and mail out a letter to your best friend. Let them know that you’re grateful to have them in your life. You can even add adorable stickers, silly inside jokes, and remind them of your favorite memories as friends. After a long day, they’ll be happy to find your letter in their mail box! Out of all the random acts of kindness ideas from this list, this has to be one of my favorites! ✉️
14. Support a local business.
Support local businesses by doing things like eating out at a family owned restaurant or shopping at boutiques near you. It’s a really terrific way to give back to your community!
15. Help out at a soup kitchen near you.
On a Saturday morning, volunteer your time at a soup kitchen. As a volunteer, some tasks may include cooking, serving food, or organizing for events. You’ll help many people who are in need in your community and get to know other volunteers. It’s truly a meaningful and rewarding experience!
16. Pick up someone else’s tab at a restaurant.
A couple of years ago, Alejandro and I were at a taqueria near home. We were just chatting and waiting for our food. Imagine our surprise when an elderly man walked quickly past our table and left us a $20 bill for dinner. He dropped the bill so quickly that we could barely say thank you. He just wanted to do something kind for us without even being thanked. It is something we still talk about to this day!
Little did that man know that we had just graduated college and were tight on money. It just goes to show, you can make a huge impact on someone’s life without even knowing!
17. Take your parents out for the day.
Surprise your parents with an entire day of fun events and destinations! Take them out for a fancy meal, enjoy a train ride to the city, see a movie, etc. 💞 They’ll have a blast and cherish the memory forever!
18. Donate to a meaningful cause.
Research and donate to different causes that mean something to you. I recently found this article on Bustle — It lists various organizations that provide menstrual products for people who need them. They sound like incredible organizations and I wanted to share them with y’all!
19. Comment something sweet on a blog post or Youtube video.
Did you recently read a blog post or watch a Youtube video that you enjoyed? Let the person know what you thought! They’ll be grateful for your kind words. The internet and social media can get quite negative, so you’ll offset that with a dose of positivity! 💛
20. Leave a nice note on your coworker’s desk.
Workdays are exhausting at times, so the note will be a lovely pick-me-up! 💗
21. Drop off care kits at a nonprofit donation center or homeless shelter.
Make a care kit with a variety of useful items to donate. A few examples are toiletries, dental hygiene products, deodorant, diapers, socks, blankets, razors, first aid kits, etc. Also, consider calling up a non profit or shelter near you and ask them what they need at the moment.
22. Take a moment to listen to someone.
When you’re in a conversation, take a moment to fully listen to someone. Really process what they’re trying to say before you respond. It’s always a great feeling to be heard by those around you!

You can show acts of kindness to the planet by looking after nature. When you’re at the beach, pick up litter that you see on the ground. Every little action helps! 🌎
24. Donate books to your local library.
Browse through your bookshelf for books you’ve already read. Donate your used novels and even textbooks to the library. You never know if a student might need that exact copy! 📚
25. Complete a charity run or walk.
There are a lot of phenomenal charity walks and runs you can be apart of! Sign up for a walk/run and ask your friends to join!
26. Plant a garden or tree in your backyard.
If you can, plant a tree in your backyard. This helps the earth because one tree alone produces nearly 260 pounds of oxygen each year! 🌳
Other random acts of kindness ideas include planting a delicious veggie or beautiful flower garden!
27. Put your phone away at a get together.
Maybe you’re having dinner with your family, traveling, or going to a party. Remain present and give your undivided attention to those around you. As fun as it is to stay up to date, Instagram can always wait!
28. Drop off blankets and pet food at an animal shelter.
You can also bring other items like towels and cot beds! 🐶

If you know any parents, give them an evening off by babysitting for free. Especially check up on any friends who are new parents and may be feeling a bit overwhelmed!
31. Make a playlist for someone you love.
Receiving a personalized playlist is just the best! 🎶
32. Give a lost stranger directions.
Help out stranger who needs directions. As a traveler, it’s relieving to talk to someone who knows the area really well! Personally, I’m terrible with directions and I always appreciate any help! If they’re visiting town, you can even recommend good places to eat or sights to see. 🗺️
33. Bring in sweet treats to your job.
We see our coworkers for the majority of our day. Often times, they become like family, so it’s nice way to say “I appreciate you.” Plus, you can’t go wrong with cookies! 🍪
34. Stop by your grandparents’ house and bring them a plant.
Surprise them with the prettiest plant at the grocery store. Succulents , cactuses, and fiddle-leaf figs make great indoor plants! 🌱
35. Offer to help a friend move into their new place.
The moving process is easier when you have support. Ask your friends if they need help with packing, moving, or unpacking!
36. Snap a picture for someone else on vacation.
If you see someone struggling to take a photo on vacation, ask if they need help. You’ll help them capture a memory, which is really awesome! 📷

Remember to show acts of kindness to yourself! 💗When a loved one gives you a compliment, accept their kind words. Also, recite positive affirmations to yourself like “I’m a beautiful person,” or “I can do whatever I set my mind to.”
38. Bring extra necessities/goodies for others during an outing.
We all forget to bring necessities when we’re traveling. If you’re going somewhere in a group, bring an extra toothbrush, sunscreen, and other little travel goodies. This will be helpful whether you’re on a family vacation, business trip, or weekend getaway with pals!
39. Visit a teacher who made an impact on your life.
Bring them a thoughtful gift (like a gift card for coffee or extra school supplies)! Teachers deserve a lot of appreciation, so make sure to let them know they’ve made a positive impact!
40. Make a self care basket for someone who is having a hard year.
If you know someone who is struggling right now, make them a self care gift basket. Fill it up with a face mask, lotion, treats, and other goodies!
